Summer Volunteer Opportunities
The programs listed below represent the Berkeley Unified School District programs, but not all teachers and staff request volunteers. We will do our best to place you in the program of your choice, but as always, we cannot guarantee placements. Please consider this when planning your summer.

SUMMER 2011 Volunteer Opportunities
Preschool: Year-round programs; 7:30 am – 6:00 pm daily *HIGH NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS*
Work with our youngest students, ages 3-5, to build their pre-literacy and pre-numeracy skills. Have fun on the playground and encourage creativity! At Hopkins, Franklin, and King CDC district preschools.
Pre-K Summer Bridge: a transition program for our students entering Kindergarten in Fall who have never attended preschool. Come help our youngest students prepare for the game of school!
June 24th – July 29th, 8:00am – 12:00 noon, Monday – Friday
Pre-K Garden Programs:
EDC Preschool campuses: general garden maintenance and possible pre-k classes
Times/Dates TBD by teacher
K-5th BEARS: June 27th – July 28th ; 7:30 am -5:30 pm daily
Work with elementary school students on literacy, math, science and special topics in this fun summer program!
Campuses: Malcolm X, Thousand Oaks
Best times for BEARS volunteers:
Monday – Thursday: 12:30 am — 2 pm
Fridays: same start/end times as Mon-Thurs, but no academic scheduling. Fridays will offer enrichment activities and is a good time for volunteer-led programs or activities. Bring a bit of yourself to the kids this summer; teach something you love!
Monday-Thursday BEARS Schedule of Activities (proposed)
7:30 -9 am: outside play, breakfast and independent activities
9-10am: Either Language Arts or Math
10-10:15am: Recess
10:15-11:15am: Either Language Arts or Math
11:15-12 noon: Reading/Lunch (overlaps with staggered lunch periods by grade levels)
12:30-2pm: Academic Tutoring/Intervention (small groups working on skills) *HIGH NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS*

2-3:30pm: Enrichment
3:30-4:30pm: PE
4:30-5:30: Independent Activities
Special Education: (all info below not yet confirmed)
Grades K-5th: Thousand Oaks and Malcolm X only; June 27th – July 28th, 9am-1:00pm, Monday – Thursday
Grades 6-8: Berkeley Adult School (on San Pablo Ave); June 27th – July 28th, 9am – 1:00pm, Monday – Thursday
Grades 9-12: Berkeley High campus; June 22nd – July 20th, 8:00am – 1:00pm, Monday – Friday
Assist our special education students with academics and life skills. At the preschool, elementary, middle, and high school levels.
(Dates, times and location vary depending on grade level.)
Middle School: June 27th – July 22nd; 8:30 am-12:30 pm daily (proposed)
Campus: Adult School (on San Pablo Avenue)
Traditionally, volunteers can assist with English and Math skills. (TBD first week of class)
Edible Schoolyard garden: Weeding Help
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:30–4:00 pm weekly (proposed)
Berkeley High School: June 22nd – July 20th; 8:00 am – 1:00 pm, Monday – Friday
Campus: Berkeley High School
Assist secondary students in a variety of academic course offerings (TBD first week of class):

Berkeley Technology High School (B-Tech): June 22nd – July 20th (Monday –Thursday); 8:30 am-12:30 pm daily (proposed)

Subjects: no confirmation yet, but likely core academics (Math, Science, English, History)
